Languages

The Modern Foreign Languages department at South Chingford Foundation School offers Spanish to all year groups. We aim to provide our students with strong linguistic skills which will enable them to travel and choose from a wider range of careers.  We believe language learning contributes to creating well-rounded learners and citizens, and it also plays an important role in the future economic well-being of students.

In our day-to-day practice we aim to give our students a taste of different cultures and traditions, and pride ourselves in giving them an ample insight to modern life in Spanish speaking countries.   We have organised visits to Spain, and China in the past, to give our students a wealth of opportunities not only to learn the language, but also to experience the culture and make new friends with the students from our respective partner schools.  Currently we are organising a cross curriculum trip to Lourdes, France for our pupils to experience what others do on a pilgrimage linked to the RE curriculum.  We will also visit Bilbao, a historic city in the north of Spain full of art and culture.  Ultimately, we strive for our students to appreciate other cultures and ways of being.

In our lessons we aim to create independent learners who take ownership of their learning, who understand and use to their advantage the metacognitive processes involved in their learning and who have the skills required for effective group work.

Our language teachers understand the importance of using a variety of activities and a wide range of interactive equipment.  We aspire to create engaging lessons which support the less able students and stretch the high achievers.  It is also a priority for us to support numeracy and literacy learning.

We are very proud of the excellent exam results achieved by our students at GCSE in recent years.
